Cross Country

Cross Country captain: Andy Hilton : aj.hilton@virgin.net

Cross country is not only a great change from the summer of road and track competitions but it also (arguably) the most fun you can have with a muddy field and a pair of spikes! For more details contact Andy Hilton or your coach.

Golden Acre Park Relays, 16th July 2008

Cross country racing traditionally takes place over the winter months, but that didn't stop Leeds athletic club Abbey Runners from organising a cross country relay at Golden Acre Park, Bramhope last Wednesday (16th July). City of York Athletic Club made the trip and were rewarded with a hatful of trophies. The senior men, veteran men and juniors all won, with the ladies team being pipped at the post.

The race was a 3 leg relay, each leg about 2.5 miles long with some sharp climbs. On the 1st leg Skipton AC took the lead with the York mens and veterans team having a good battle for 4th place in which Graham Birch for the veterans eventually prevailed over Mike Raynes for the men. Emma Willits put Yorks womens team in front as did Charlotte Mason the juniors, while Zoe Robson ran for the York mixed team, a female team of juniors and seniors.

Mark Metcalf for York men ran fastest on leg 2, but could only pull up 2 places to 3rd. For the veterans over 60 vet Jim Shemilt dropped to 5th , passed only by clubmate Metcalf. Karen Wood for the ladies held on to 1st place, but a team called Rubix made up ground. Saffron Botterill increased Yorks lead in the junior competition and Kate Harris ran for the Mixed team.

Andy Hilton started the 3rd and last leg just 14 seconds adrift of Skipton with Abbey Runners also just ahead. As course record holder he was the favourite to cross the line 1st and so it proved, with Andy finishing 30 seconds ahead of Skipton with Abbey 3rd. Andy ran the days fastest leg, but didn’t beat his own course record. For the veterans Andy Normandale ran a solid, but isolated leg bringing the team in 5th, but way ahead of the next vets team. For the ladies, Helen Garnham ran the clubs fastest leg, but unfortunately it was not fast enough to hold off Jess Trowbridge of Rubix, who ran the days fastest female leg. Katy Wood completed the junior team, who were nearly 5 minutes ahead of their nearest rivals, while Natalie Greaves completed the Mixed team.
