October 31st 2011 - Races 1 and 2 of West Yorkshire League plus General updates

The season continues.  We have now had 2 of the West Yorkshire League fixtures including our own version.  This latter went well and many thanks to everybody who helped.
I've tried to keep the story of the West Yorkshire League races short – apologies if you think I should have included something.  Both days have had similar results and similar weather conditions – dry and firm underfoot.  I'm sure it will revert to something more appropriate next time – e.g. mud!
Both times we've been led off by Joshua Dickinson with fine second places in U11 boys.  He's been ably backed by Elliott, Toby and Finnian and the team have finished 3rd and 2nd – first next time?
The U13 girls managed to complete a team at Knavesmire and came 2nd led home by Nicole Grenier in 5th place supported by 3 in the mid teens.  We had a couple of U15 girls at York and Rowan and Jade finished 7th and 16th.  Our U17 girls have won both fixtures with 4 in top 10 becoming 3 in top 6 at York.  A fine team effort and I think we're getting closer to the leaders.
Tyler has had individual 2nd and 3rd places in U13 boys.  At Nunroyd Alex Botterill went too hard early – I don't think he realised there were 2 laps!  He's learnt this and with good runs from Lewis and Nathan the team came 2nd at York.  There were only 2 U15 boys at Nunroyd and they tripped each other up!  Things improved at York with Josh Schofield powering away to victory at the end ably backed by Charlie, Ben, Phil and James to finish 4th team.
There have been several other juniors who've made their competitive XC debuts for the club – congratulations to all of you and hopefully you've enjoyed it.
Seniors has been a mixed bag – the ladies have run well (placing 21st, 16th, 17th and 23rd) but been light on numbers, so no team result.  Whereas the men have had the numbers but been light on quality!  Our first finishers were Ryan (24th) at Nunroyd and Andy Normandale (53rd ) at York.  It's been good to see a number of new faces and hopefully Andy, Rory, Mark, Keith and Howard all enjoyed their races.
Other results I'm aware of include the English Schools  Fell running championships where Tyler Hutchinson finished 8th (bottom end of age group) and Nathan Smith finished 2nd in the Year 7 race – well done to both of you.
Its not too late to enter the remaining West Yorkshire League races – send me details and I will organise it for you.  I need to submit entries for the championship races in December – please tell me whether you want to enter by early December.
Whilst we have a larger number of runners than last year, it is still less than a club our size should have.  To run well next year (track or road), you will need a serious winters training and cross country is the best way to do this.  And as we all know it's the most fun you can have in a muddy field with a pair of spikes…or something similar!

October 1st 2011 - North of England, Relays - Graves Park, Sheffield

The season has begun.
Saturday was the North of England relays at Sheffield. We entered 8 teams and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves, despite or possibly because the weather was exceedingly hot for XC – I for one found the second half of the lap a long way! There were many good runs, particularly pleasing to see our U11 boys finishing 5th with Joshua Dickinson starting them off 3rd and the two Hutchinson boys largely holding the team position.Finnian in his first run for the club seemed to be smiling whenever I saw him. Pride of place goes to our U15 boys A team who finished 2nd, see them collecting medals in the picture. The opening legs by Charlie Sarginson and Ben Lewis kept us in contact with the lead teams before Joshua Schofield saw the team through to second with the second fastest time of the day. This was just as well as the fastest time was being set by the team in 3rd, 2 seconds behind at the finish.
