20th June 2009
Well done to all our Special Olympians who competed at the Yorkshire and Humberside Special Olympics athletic event at Huntington Stadium on Saturday 20th June 2009. The event was attended by the Lord Major of York who welcomed everyone to Huntington Stadium. City of York athlete, Joe Hadfield read the Special Olympics moto, "If I cannot win, then make me brave in the attempt " before the games were opened.
Although the weather was a mixture of sunshine and showers City of York ACs team of 8 athletes were soon in action in the throwing, jumping and running events. Joe Hadfied won gold medal in the soffball and silver in the Long Jump and 100m. Josh Blackburn won gold and Chris Cook bronze in their 100m division. Lewis Beatie, the youngest member of the team, won gold in his softball throw and Daniel Westmorland received a bronze medal for his soft ball throw. For the girls Laura Wells gained the bronze medal in her softball division. The boys relay team of Daniel Westmoreland, Chris Cook, Josh Blackburn and Joe Hadfield won silver medal. Well done also to Cameron Long and Emma Lindsay for their fantastic efforts on the day. Thanks to Debbie Mason for her help on the day.
