Saltersgate Gallows fell race, 19th October
We had a great start to the Cleveland winter series, achieving what we failed to do in the very successful summer series - be 1st team, the men prevailing in a close battle with Esk Valley, North Yorks Moors and Thirsk & Sowerby. Andy Normandale was first counter in 7th place with Matt Driscoll and Martin Perry not far behind in 10th and 12th places and with Mike 'The Master' Hetherton in 31st.

Langdale Horseshoe Fell race, 10th October
My first
“Counter”
For several years I
have completed the Langdale horseshoe fell race. This year was no different, but
the event was selected to be a counter towards the English Fell Championship, so
rather than being towards the front of the field at the start, I was at the back
behind the stars of the fell running scene. The start at the Old Dungeon Ghyll
was a disorganised affair, a quick shout and fell running elite had disappeared
through the farm yard and on to the narrow path to the New Dungeon Ghyll. I was
stranded at the back. On the climb to Thunacarr Knott I gained ground,
overtaking quite a few people. The view from the summit was marvellous, the sun
was out, the mountain peaks emerging from the clouded valleys, it was really was
a great day to be on the fells. The steady climb to Esk Hause sapped a lot of
energy and I took my first tumble of the day. From Esk Hause the route takes a
glorified and rocky sheep track across the front of Esk Pike before heading up to
Bow Fell. I struggled on the descent from Bow Fell as my shoes did not have
enough grip to allow me to confidently run down to the tarn. At the summit of
Crinkle Crags I was surprised to see a familiar face (from 5 years back!) who
was marshalling the event. My spirits improved and I decided to tackle the “bad
step” rather than troll down the tourist path. The down climb of 10 feet of rock
in running shoes is always hair raising. The final peak was Pike Blisco and from
there it was steady run, and several more tumbles, down the grassy slopes back
to the Dungeon Ghyll. I was surprised to be so close to Andy by the finish, but
there again was the quickest that I have ever run the event.
