Match Reports
Match 3, 9th July 2008 Jarrow.
City of York A Team travelled to Jarrow on Sunday to try and continue their success of the last 2 matches which were both won. Sunday turned out to be the same leading from start to finish winning by over 50 points with some excellent team performances. Ingrams Athlete of the Day went to Andy Hilton who starred with a magnificent achievement of winning the 800m, 1500m, 3000m steeple chase and 5000m, it was just amazing to watch. He was followed by thrower Mark Wearing who starred in the pole vault clearing 3.00m, Mark then went on to win the Javelin, 2nd in the discus, 4th in the shot and then ran an excellent 3rd leg of the 4x100m.
For the women Ingrams Athlete of the Day went to Multi Eventer Laura Hunter who won the Javelin, and then came 2nd in the Hammer, discus and 400m. A great achievement considering only one of these events is actually in the Heptathlon. Saturday 3rd May saw both City of York A and B teams compete at Huntington Stadium in Division 2E and Division 4E respectively. This was the first time for a number of years that COY have fielded 2 senior teams in a league which shows how the club is now growing.
City of York A Team won their match by 102 points from Gateshead, Middlesbrough, Morpeth, Durham and Scarborough. The B Team won their match by a massive 99 points from Houghton & Peterlee, Richmond & Zetland, Middlesbrough & Cleveland, Birtley, Hartlepool and Blaydon. A great performance considering this was Yorks 2nd team and they were up against all the respective first team clubs. 15 year old Oliver Bird and Ryan Buck both had 2 wins, Oliver won the 400m and 800m and Ryan winning the 400m Hurdles and 1500m. Club Chairman Neil Hunter competed in 6 events scoring great points and managing to get over all the hurdles in the 110m Hurdle race. Veterans Keith Bennington and Mark Harney won the Triple Jump and Long Jump respectively, Keith also winning the B Long Jump. Martin Rigby also starred in the Shot, Discus, Hammer and even did the 200m, not bad for a over 50. There were also wins for Karen Wood, Alice Wilkinson and a great 2nd place for the 4 X 100m relay team of Anna Dew, Paula Bird, Yvette Carlin and star performer making her debut for the Team Jan Rigby ran a storming leg to help the team to 2nd place.
A great day was had by all and the main thing that shone out was a great team spirit and a day enjoyed by all and a few sore bodies the next day no doubt !
