What is Sport and Exercise Science?

Sport and Exercise Science is the application of scientific prinicples to sport and / or exercise environments for the purposes of performance or health enhancement. The different disciplines of Sport and Exercise Science are Biomechanics, Physiology and Psychology. There is also an additional aspect to Sport and Exercise Science known as 'Interdisciplinary', which involves integrating knowledge and practices from two or more of the aforementioned disciplines to benefit the client.

Sport Sciences support at the City of York Athletics Club is provided by Adam Gledhill, who is often supported by local foundation degree and undergraduate students reading for qualifications in Sport and Exercise Sciences or related disciplines.

About Adam

Adam is a lecturer in Sport and Exercise Sciences / Sports Therapy at York College, is currently the programme leader for the Nationals in Sport and Exercise Sciences provision and is the new Team Leader for Sport. Outside of his full time career, Adam is also working towards a PhD at Loughborough University investigating psychosocial and environmental factors associated with talent development in youth athletes, is an assessment associate / external verifier and qualification author for a leading examination board and is currently working towards a portfolio of evidence for BASES individual accreditation in Sport Psychology (scientific support). Adam has a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Sciences from York St John University, a MSc in Sport and Exercise Sciences from Leeds Metropolitan University and a number of additional industry related qualifications including VTCT Diploma in Sports Massage and 1st for Sport Level 3 Certificate in the Treatment and Management of Injuries.

What is BASES?

BASES stands for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and is the professional body for sport and exercise sciences within the UK (for more information about BASES, please follow the link: http://www.bases.org.uk/About-Bases).

What is BASES accreditation?

BASES accreditation is involved with setting, maintating and enhancing the ethical and professional standards for those who are actively involved with Sport and Exercise Sciences. When do the sessions run?

Sessions are available at York College in the Sport and Exercise Sciences laboratory on Thursday nights from 7pm to 9pm (during term time) and are run on both an invitation and appointment basis. Additional sessions are also held at the athletics track during meetings and training sessions where possible. For more information about accessing the sessions, please contact Paula Bird using the contact details on the home page.
