Les Richards selected to throw for England Senior International in Belgium on 7th June

City of York Athletic Club's Les Richards has been selected to throw for England at the Kessel-Lo, a Flanders Cup event to be held in Belgium on 7th June 2008. (For more information about the event visit www.englandathletics.org/teams)

This will be the first senior International for Les, aged 23, as he has previously competed for Great Britain at U20 and U23 level. Les has been selected for the Shot Putt, in which his personal best stands at 17.21m which he achieved during the winter.

Les, who is known as a gentle giant, stands at 6ft6 and weighs 21stone and is hoping to go to Beijing for the Discus which he has thrown in excess of 56 metres.

Ingrams Solicitors Early Season Festival of Athletics, Saturday 24th May 2008, Huntington Stadium, York

The first Ingrams Festival of Athletics, held at Huntington Stadium last weekend, was set up to provide young athletes from York the chance to compete in track and field events in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The day offered the 42 athletes who entered the chance to take part in one sprint, one endurance run, the long jump and the shot putt.

Highlights from the day included 8 year old Alex Botterill taking gold in all 4 of the under 9 boys events, chased by 7 year old Steven Crake, a visitor from Ellenborough AC who was the youngest entrant on the day and was competing for the first time. Kate Reader took gold in 3 events in the under 9 girls, followed by Kirsty Stanton and Lucy Brennan. Well done to all in this youngest category!

For the under 11 boys Thomas Wood took gold in both the 600m and long jump, while James Fowler took gold in the 75m and shot putt. Taking silvers were Oliver Logan, Oliver Baron and Sam Emmott, while Sam Lightwing, Oliver Hackwell and Sam Emmott each achieved bronze results. For the under 11 girls Georgie Fenny took gold in the 600m and shot putt, while Grace Greenwood took gold in the 75m and long jump. Silvers went to Gemma Goble, Anna Richardson, Rachel White, Grace Greenwood and Georgie Fenny and bronze results to Georgia McMahon, Anna Richardson and Rachel White.

The 4 gold awards for under 13 boys went to Jack Hopwood for the shot, Jake Stephenson for the 800m and Jamie McMahon for the 80m and long jump. Silvers went to James Stanton and Edward Dixon and bronze to James Stanton and James Proctor. In the under 13 girls category Anya Limbert took 3 golds, with Lauren Bird pushing Anya into 2nd place to take gold in the 800m. Silvers also went to Katie Bevan, Zoe Robson and Lucy McPherson and bronzes to Katie Bevan.

In the under 15s the 200m and long jump events were taken by Matt Kitching for the boys and Saffron Botterill for the girls. Silvers went to Oliver Neill, Ben Lightwing, Amy Buck and Katy Wood and bronzes to Oliver Neill and Amy Buck. In the shot Amy Buck threw 5.45m to take gold.

It was fantastic to see some great results from 5 athletes who entered from City of York Athletic Clubs newly established disability training group. Chloe Buck took gold in the 50m sprint, the long jump and the shot putt. Lucy McPherson took 2 silvers, Emma Lyndsey took bronze in the shot and Jess McPherson took bronze in the 50m. Shaun Davies took gold in long jump and shot, achieving the furthest throw of the day at 5.94m.

And there's more to come: The new Ingrams Summer Athletic League is open to athletes of all abilities from age 8 upwards. Entrants do not need to be a Club member or have any experience of competition. Yorkshire Championships, 10th/11th May, Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield
27 medals for City of York AC


City of York Athletic Club returned from the Yorkshire Championships held at the Don Valley Stadium last weekend with a massive 27 medal wins! With the help of the Clubs main sponsor, Ingrams Solicitors, City of York AC has extended its training sessions, enabling athletes to train 3 evenings a week at Huntington Stadium. At the Sheffield event the Clubs athletes competed against over a dozen Athletic Clubs from around Yorkshire and beyond. The City of York AC team won gold twice in the 4x100m relay events (senior/junior women and U17 men) to prove themselves as a team as well as individually.

Seven athletes took home individual gold medals, with most wins coming from the throw events. Well done to Rebecca Tunnicliffe (U15 girls shott putt 10.36), Sam Blain (U15 boys hammer 50.61), Luke Slater (U17 mens hammer 49.35), Kirsty Taylor (U17 womens discus 28.95), Paul Allsopp (U20 mens javelin 53.78) and Morgan Bell (U20 mens hammer 53.16). On the track Thomas Kimpson took gold in the U15 boys 400m (53.32).

City of York scooped 8 silver medals, with the throws team taking 3 silvers: Sam Beavers (U15 boys hammer 39.60), Lloyd Woolacott (U17 mens hammer 44.05) and Paul Allsopp (senior mens javelin 55.13). On the field Ali Stedman took silver in the U20 mens high jump (1.65metres), while four further silver medals were won in track events: Oliver Palmer (U17 mens 400m hurdles 61.09), Laura Skelton (U15 girls 75m hurdles 12.20), Jess Foster (U17 womens 100m 13.06) and Andy Hilton (senior mens 5000m 15.24.37).

10 bronze medals were taken, and again the throwers took the lead: Well done to Rebecca Tunnicliffe (U15 girls discus 19.70 and javelin 28.57), Ali Stedman (U20 men javelin and shot putt 10.29) and Amanda Blacker (Sen/U20 women javelin 28.87). In the jumps it was well done to Jamie Garbutt (U17 mens long jump 5.49), Richard Wilcock (U20 mens high jump 1.60) and Laura Skelton (U15 girls long jump 4.82). Ruth Hill took third place in the U17 womens 100m finishing in 13.22 seconds while Iain Lynn came third in the U20 mens 2000m steeplechase in a time of 6.23.68.

Also competing for City of York AC were Jess Elsworth, Stacey Bell, Laura Rigby, Aaron Willerton, Chad Stephenson, Lauren Bird, Megan Foster, Chloe Smyrk, James Buck, Victoria Seller, Leanne Shaw, Adam Collinson, Becky Campsall, Laura Skelton, Charlotte Mason, Saffron Botterill, Dean Clarkson, Kieran Smith, Abigain Hardy-Mayo, James Palmer, Katie Mellor, and Katy Wood. Hammer report 12th May 2008

All three of the Hammer throwers who won Yorkshire titles in 2007 also won gold medals in the 2008 Yorkshire Championships held at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield on Saturday and Sunday. All four throwers in the younger age groups threw personal best performances. In the Under 15s Sam Blain excelled with the 4 kilo hammer when he threw 50.61 to move to the number one spot in the UK rankings. His team mate in the same age group, Sam Beavers, came second and also moved into the UK top 12 with a throw of 39.60 metres.

In the Under 17s Luke Slater retained his title with a throw of 49.35 with the 5k Hammer and moved to 11th in the UK rankings whilst team mate Lloyd Woolacott placed second with 44.05 to improve his national ranking position.

Under 20s Champion, Morgan Bell, who ranks 9th in the UK, also placed 4th in the Senior Mens competition after placing 4th in the British Universities Championships the previous week.

City of York AC record breakers 12th/13th April

The opening weekend of the athletics season saw athletes from City of York AC travel around the region to represent their Club at track and field fixtures in Hull, Shildon and Wakefield. Not satisfied with medal successes the performances included Les Richards two new Club records for senior mens discus and shot putt.

Six athletes from City of York AC travelled to the Kingston upon Hull AC open meet at the Costello Stadium. Congratulations to Adam Collinson who picked up 2 first place medals in the Under 17 mens 200m (23.87 secs) and 400m (51.98secs) and took second place in the 100m with a time of 11.7 seconds. Also in U17 mens events Oliver Palmer took first place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.89 seconds. In the under 15 boys 800m race Oliver Dixon took gold with a time of 2.13.82 minutes while James Palmer ran the mens mile race in 4.45.23 minutes. What a great performance from the mens team.

For the under 13 girls Anya Limbert finished a good 9th place in a large field in the 80m sprint event in a time of 12.09 seconds and ran the 150m equally well in 22.71 seconds. For the women, junior/senior 400m race Vicky Seller ran a creditable time of 1.06.19 minutes. Well done girls!

Well done also to two athletes who competed on Sunday 13 April at Shildon against athletes from the North East region. Both ran in the 800m event: Zoe Robson ran the under 13 girls race in a time of 2 minutes 55 while Stephen Nesbitt achieved 2 minutes 25 in the senior mens race.

The Wakefield Harriers Open meet at Thornes Park Stadium saw nearly 400 athletes congregate from all over the North of England. A wet and cold day, the team of 18 athletes from City of York AC did their Club and themselves proud, returning with a clutch of medals and some record breaking performances that proved the weather couldn't dampen their spirits.

A stunning 11 gold positions were taken by City of York athletes, with 9 silver and 4 bronze as well as many strong place results and personal best performances. In top place for the men were Thomas Kimpson (U15 boys 800m, 2.10.2 minutes), James Buck (U17men 400m, 52.2 seconds), Paul Allsop (U20 men javelin, 48.65 metres), Ali Steadman (U20 men long jump, 5.13 metres) and Les Richards (senior mens discus, 50.15 metres and senior mens shot putt, 16.34 metres). Not only did Les Richards take gold in these two throw events but he broke the Club records for both, an outstanding performance Les, congratulations!

Second places went to Jamie Garbutt (U17 mens long jump, 5.28 metres), Ali Steadman (U20 mens javelin, 31.91 metres) and Morgan Bell (senior mens hammer, 46.31 metres) and third to Mark Wearing (senior mens discus, 39.03 metres). Also performing well on the day for the mens team was Gregory Storey who just missed out on the top 3 places in both his events (5th place in the U15 boys 200m with 27.1 seconds and 4th place in the U15 boys 100m at 13.3 seconds). Bringing home gold for the ladies team were Rebecca Tunnicliffe (U15 girls shot putt, 9.31 metres), Jessica Elsworth (U17 ladies high jump, 1.55 metres), Kirsty Taylor (U17 ladies shot putt, 8.05 metres), Jess Foster (U17 ladies triple jump, 10.08 metres) and Chloe Smyrk (U20 ladies shot putt, 7.86 metres). Also in the silverware with second places were Georgie Fenny (U11 girls 600m, 2.07.6 minutes), Jess Foster (U17 ladies 100m, 13.6 seconds), Kirsty Taylor (U17 ladies discus, 28.02 metres), Jessica Elsworth (U17 ladies javelin, 32.67 metres and U17 ladies shot putt, 7.16 metres) and Annie Roberts (U20 ladies long jump, 4.49 metres).

More medals were taken by Georgie Fenny with two bronze results (U11 girls 80m, 13.5 seconds and U11 girls long jump 3.29 metres) and Chloe Smyrk who also took bronze (U20 ladies discus, 33.09 metres). Well done also to Megan Foster who took 6th place amongst a field of 26 athletes in the U13 girls long jump with a jump of 3.59 metres. Well done to all the team for a great result!

Liverpool Results

On Sat 12th April three City of York AC athletes attended the Liverpool Harriers Jumps and Throws Meet. Victorious for City of York were Chad Stevenson, placed first in the U20 mens long jump with a leap of 6.48 metres, and Jess Foster, placed first in the U17 womens triple jump with an excellent personal best of 10.39 metres. Morgan Bell also competed in the senior mens hammer throw, placed 4th with a massive throw distance of 47.37 metres. Hammer Throwers Results 19th April 2008

Senior member Ben Jones opened the 2008 season in January, recording a throw of 50.49 metres when he visited Bellville in South Africa a throw which places him in the UK Top Twenty.

Luke Slater, Under 17, opened the UK season at the Scunthorpe Winter Warm Up meeting at the end of March. He won the Under 17 competition with 46.15 metres in cold conditions. He followed this up, on the 12th April, with a personal best of 47.37 at the Liverpool Throws and Jumps Competition a throw which also broke the City of York Under 17 club record held by Morgan Bell and places him in the UK Top Ten.

Morgan Bell, now an Under 20, competed in the Senior Competition and also threw a personal best of 47.37 metres which places him a creditable 25th in the UK senior rankings.

On 13th April Morgan Bell came second at the Wakefield Open Senior Mens Competition with a throw 46.31 whilst three younger throwers travelled to Hull to compete in the National Hammer Circle sponsored event which included a number of world class throwers. Luke Slater placed 3rd with 46.40 in the Under 17s, with Lloyd Woolacott coming 4th with a personal best throw of 40.59 metres. Under 15 Sam Blain opened his season with a personal best throw of 43.99 which places him 6th in the UK rankings.

Norwich Union World Indoor Trials, Sheffield, February 9th/10th

Richard Buck made a big breakthrough to win the 400m, knocking over half a second off his best time and has been selected for the World Championships for the individual event and the relay. Prior to the meeting Richards best stood at 47.05s, but in the semi he improved this to 46.85s and then to 46.53 in the final.

However Richard was not the only club member in action in the meeting. New signing 22 year old Les Richards who stands at 6 foot 6 and weighs 21 stone made his York debut at Sheffield and came a creditable 7th with a new personal best and club record of 16.19m in the Mens Shot Putt. Les, coached by Paul Wilson had set himself a target of a top 8 finish as he is a discus thrower firstly which in 2007 he was ranked Number 1 in the UK for an Under 23. Les has now finished for the season on the indoor circuit and now looks forward to warm weather training in Portugal at Easter with Paul Wilson and his squad of throwers and other City of York athletes. Les will be hoping to qualify for the Bejing Olympics in the discus as he is only 2 metres away from the qualifying standard having thrown a massive 57m in 2007.

North of England Indoor Championships 2008
Under 15 & Under 17, Sheffield 27/1/2008


At this weekends Northern Championships Becky Tunnicliffe starred picking the only medal up for City of York AC in the Under 15 girls Shot Putt. Becky who is better known as a javelin thrower where she ranked 5th in the UK for Under 13's last year turned her hand to the shot putt after her coach Paul Wilson thought she could do well at it. He was right as she putt the shot to a new PB of 9.68m to win the Silver medal and increase her personal best by more than a metre.

Becky has recently been training with her coach Paul and UK number 1 javelin thrower Goldie Sayers as she prepares for the Olympics in Bejing. Other good performance on the day saw U17 Jess Elsworth finish 5th in the 60m Hurdles and 7th in the High Jump, Oliver Palmer finished 7th in the 60m Hurdles final, and further good performances from Thomas Kimpson 200m, Brogan Fraser 60m and 200m sprint, and Adam Collinson 60m and 200m sprint.

Yorkshire Championships 12th/13th May 2007
On 12th and 13th of May, City of York athletes took part in the annual County Championships in what turned out to be one of the coldest and wettest weekends of the year so far. Considering the conditions the athletes did excellent with a grand haul of 29 medals of which 10 were Gold.

The Gold medallists were Luke Slater U17 Hammer, Annabel Roberts U17 Triple Jump, Paul Allsopp U17 Javelin, Morgan Bell U20 Hammer, Sam Blain U15 Hammer, Adam Collinson U15 100m and 200m, Becky Campsall U17 200m, Iain Lynn U17 1500 Steeple Chase and the U17 4x100m Relay Team of Becky Campsall, Laura Rigby, Helen Goacher and Jess Foster.

Other Medalists were Charlotte Maxted Silver, Alex Webb Silver, Paul Allsopp Silver, Lauren Bodie Silver and Bronze, Anna Howard Bronze, Lloyd Woolocott Bronze, Annabel Roberts Bronze, Chad Stephenson Bronze, Ali Steadman Bronze, Tom Lightwing Bronze, Laura Skelton 2x Silver and a Bronze, Chris Gill Silver, Alice McCabe Bronze, Ali Dewar Silver, Natalie Jones Bronze, James Buck Silver, Becky Campsall Silver and Helen Goacher Bronze.

Well done to all the medal winners and the other athletes who performed well and just missed out.
